This madcap idea is all about raising awareness, and, of course, raising money for Safe In Sussex, the Registered Charity that provides most of the services in the West Sussex area for adults and children affected by domestic abuse. As they say themselves:
We are committed to preventing domestic abuse and providing education and training on how to spot the signs of domestic abuse and promoting healthy relationships. We have safe refuge accommodation within West Sussex and have access to accommodation out of area for those who need it.
Safe in Sussex runs the Freedom Programme – a 12 week programme to support women, it shows the effects of domestic abuse on children, helps women recognise future abusers and helps women gain confidence to improve their quality of life. Plus other educational programmes.
What is Domestic Abuse? Over 1 in 4 (source: Womens Aid) will experience domestic abuse between the ages of 16 and 59 and the vast majority are women. Domestic Abuse can be financial, psychological, physical, emotional or sexual – and there is no excuse. Understanding the difference between domestic abuse and a healthy relationship could save someones life one day.
Safe in Sussex receives 14% of its funding from the government. The rest is through grants, fundraising events, donations legacies and corporate sponsorship.
I am proud to have been asked to be a patron of the Charity and you can see the press release here!
So that is why!
